Semester 2 week 1-6 Flashcards
what does the integument encompass?
skin, hair, nails, sebaceous glands, sweat glands
what does assessment of integument reveal?
info about health status & indicated pot concerns
findings reflect hydration, nutrition & emotional status
3 functions of integumentary system
primary immune defense
thermoregulation
vit D synth
what are some features of the epidermis?
outermost layer of skin
location of vit D synth
avascular
5 layers of epidermis?
corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, germinativum
which layer of skin contains glands & follicles?
dermis
what are the two layers of the dermis?
papillary dermis & reticular dermis
what is the subcutaneous layer composed mostly of?
fat (adipose tissue) & loose connective tissue
what is melasma?
increased pigmentation of face during pregnancy
what is the linea nigra?
darkened line extending from umbilicus to pubic area
what is vernix?
cheese-like substance (epithelial cells + sebum) that may be on a newborn (protects from effects of amniotic fluid)
what is lanugo?
fine hair that may be covering a newborn
what is a preterm baby at risk for?
inadequate thermoregulation, skin injury and edema
what is a pressure ulcer?
area of tissue necrosis due to prolonged compression of body tissue b/w a firm surface and bony prominences
what is used to assess pressure ulcers?
braden scale - assess risk of development
what is the method for screenign moles?
ABCDEs A- asymmetry B- border C- colour D- diameter (more than 6 mm) E- evolution
what are health promotion topics for the integumentary system?
risk factors for skin cancer, skin self-examination, sun safety, tanning booths, vit D deficiency
what does seek, slip, slap & slop mean?
seek out shade, slip on a shirt, slap on hat & sunglasses, slop on sunscreen
what is pruritis?
itching
what is stress?
stressors are stimuli - events that activate stress response
internal or external
biological stress response activated when: acute threat to body integrity, psychological well-being, sense of self-worth
explain general adaptation syndrome
H. Seyle, it’s a biological stress syndrome, has 3 stages 1) alarm reaction - fight or flight 2) resistance stage - maintains arousal while body works to defend against & adapt to stressor 3) exhaustion stage- pathological state, diverse health consequences
what does allostasis mean?
serious stressors can change phsyiological set points (think negative feedback set points) through adaptation
Maintaining a state of readiness has energy costs
what is coping?
active process of managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve problems, & seeking to master, minimize, reduce or tolerate stress or conflict
what is crisis?
previous ways of coping not effective, crisis may occur - face a turning pt & person must change
frame of reference for a crisis is the person experiencing it
a person can either advance or regress as a result of a crisis
