Semester 1 Review Flashcards
What are the three stages of blood clotting?
1) vasoconstriction
2) primary hemostasis (platelets and vWF)
3) secondary hemostasis (clotting factors)
What part of the CBC/Fe panel tells you if it is a microcytic or macrocytic anemia?
The MCV
Mean cell volume
Its the average volume (size) of RBCs
What is the definition of anemia?
Low RBC, low Hbg, or Hct
What controls the production of RBC?
Erythropoeitin secreted via kidneys
Reticulocyte
Is a good indication of how the bone marrow is responding to low RBC
What does a retic count of greater than 2 mean?
That the bone marrow is reacting and the RBC loss is due to bleeding or hemolysis
What does a retic count less than 2 mean?
Failure of the bone marrow to respond to low RBC either from the absence of epo production, nutrients, or damaged marrow
High indirect bilirubin represents what?
Hemolysis
What 4 lab results point to hemolysis?
High indirect bilirubin
High retic count
High LDH
Hemoglobinuria
What is MCHC?
Mean cell hemoglobin
Average Hgb per RBC
What is MCH?
Mean cell Hgb
Average Hgb for ALL cells
This can tell you if its hypochomic or hyperchromic
How is the Mentzer index calculated?
MCV/RBC
What does a Metzner index of greater than 13 suggest?
Fe deficiency anemia
<13 suggests thalassemia trait
