What happens in the Creation Story?

Why do we use abbreviations in the bible?
So the reader can find the verse in the bible.
What does abbreviation mean?
A shortened form of a word or phrase.
What happened on the first day of the Creation Story?
God created light/day, and darkness/night.

God created the arrangement of water.

God created dry land and vegetation.

God created the sun and the moon.

Genesis was not written as a scientific textbook, but instead as symbolic storytelling.
What do we gain from reading Genesis?
We learn that God made the World, and he made it out of love.

We can make choices between right and wrong. We are the leaders.
What does the word subdue, mean?
Take care of.
What does it mean when you say, “… have dominion over the earth and subdue it?”
Humans are entrusted with the earth and creation.
What does the name Adam, mean?
Dirt. God formed Adam from the ground.
What was the name of the place God created for Adam to live?
Eden.
Geographically, Eden would be in Southern Day Mesopotamia. This area is now what?
Modern day Iraq.
When God created the animals, how did they get their names?
Adam named them.
Why did God create Eve?
Because God saw that the animals weren’t a sufficient partner for Adam, so he created Eve.
How was Eve formed?
Out of one of Adam’s ribs.
What does the name Eve, mean?
Living. Eve is thought to be “The mother of the living.”
What does the fall refer to?
The first sin of humans.
What does sin mean?
Distrusting God or pursuing your own desires above God.
Who convinced Adam and Eve to eat the fruit from the tree?
The serpent/snake.
Who ate the fruit from the forbidden tree first?
Eve.
How did Adam come to eat the fruit?
Eve offered it to him.
What was the result of Adam and Eve eating the fruit?
God banished them from the garden and recruited an angel to watch over and protect it.
What is the first sin referred to or called?
The original sin.
Who were Adam and Eve’s sons?
Cain and Abel.

Cain: Farmer

Because he offered his best.

What did Noah do after 10 months?
Noah released a raven and it did not return. He then released a dove, and it returned empty handed. He released another dove and it returned with an olive branch.
The dove returned with an olive branch, so what might that mean?
There are crops growing, so that must mean there is dry land.
After the flood, what did Noah build?
An altar, so he could worship the Lord.
What is a covenant?
A promise.
What is the covenant that God makes with Noah?
That he will never flood the earth again.
What does the rainbow have to with the story of Noah and the Ark?
The rainbow is God’s sign of his covenant to Noah.

She is getting old and doesn’t think she can have children.
What does Sarah allow Abraham to do, because she does not believe she can have children?
She allows Abraham to have children with her Egyptian servant, Hagar.
Do Abraham and Hagar have a child? If so, what is the child’s name?
Yes, Hagar has Abraham’s child, Ishmael.
Does Sarah eventually become pregnant?
Yes, in her old age.
Why do people believe this is a miraculous work of God?
Because she is very old.

God sends an angel to stop Abraham.

What is Isaac’s wife’s name?
Rebekah.

Yes, they had twin boys, named Jacob and Esau.
What does Jacob mean in Hebrew, and why is this significant?
Jacob’s name means “heel” in Hebrew. This is significant because when the boys were born, Jacob was grasping Esau’s heel.
Which twin was technically older?
Esau.
Which twin was entitled to a birthright blessing from their father Isaac, because they were the oldest?
Esau.
Why was Jacob upset?
He wanted the birthright blessing, so he came up with a plan to steal it.
What was Jacob’s plan?
Isaac was old and had gone blind. Jacob decided that while Esau was away, he would dress up as Esau, and ask Isaac for the blessing.
Did Jacob’s plan work?
Yes, Isaac fell for it, and blessed Jacob.
Who does Jacob go to live with?
His uncle, Laban.
How many children does Jacob have with his two wives?

What is God’s promise to Abraham and was it fulfilled?
Abraham’s descendants will be as numerous as the stars, and yes it was fulfilled.
God speaks to Abraham in a dream about his covenant. Was it renewed?
Yes. God renewed his promise to Abraham about having a big and blessed family.
What does God change Jacob’s name to?
Israel.
Why are all the descendants of Jacob later called Israelites?
Because God changed Jacob’s name to Israel.
Who are Noah’s three sons?
Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Why did the people decide to build a tower in the sky?
Because it is symbolic of pride and arrogance.
