They joined them and started excitedly looking around.

46
Q

Where do Ralph and the hunters decided to go after looking around the rocky area? (chapter 6)

A

To the mountain to check if the fire is still going.

47
Q

Golding describes Jack as having long hair and tanned, even burnt and blistering skin. What does this intend to tell the reader? (chapter 3)

A

That the boys had been on the island for quite some time.

48
Q

What are the “droppings” Jack finds and what is a pig run? (chapter 3)

A

The droppings were pig poo and a pig run is a group of pigs running together.

49

A

Trying to build shelters.

51
Q

What do Ralph and Jack argue about? (chapter 3)

Ralph thinks the hunters should help build shelters and are being lazy like everyone else that stopped working since hunting is fun and they never come back with anything.

Jack thinks that his desire for meat outweighs the need for shelters and that building them isn’t his problem.

52
Q

Why do the littluns scream during the night? (chapter 3)

A

Because they’re scared of the beastie and worry that they aren’t on a good island.

53
Q

A

Detailed sandcastles.

56

What do Roger and Maurice do? (chapter 4)

A

They ruin the sandcastles the littluns were working on.

57
Q

Golding notes that “In his other life Maurice had received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now, though there was no parent to lay a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing.” What point do you think William Golding is trying to make? (chapter 4)

A

That the boys still have morals.

58
Q

What happens between Roger and Henry at the lagoon? (chapter 4)

A

Henry waved a stick in the water and little creatures followed it. Roger watched in intrigue.

59
Q

What does Jack do with the charcoal and clay? (chapter 4)

Golding says that “the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated by shame and self-consciousness.” What is Golding trying to say here?

A

He paints his face with it.

He’s saying that not looking like yourself can make you feel more confident since it brings a sense of detachment from you and your actions.

60
Q

What does Ralph see off on the horizon?

A

A ship’s smoke.

A

Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood.

63
Q

How does Ralph insult Jack’s hunters? (chapter 8)

A

He calls them boys armed with sticks.

64
Q

How does Jack begin to turn the other boys against Ralph at the assembly? (chapter 8)

A

He says that Ralph isn’t a good chief and then he leaves Ralph’s tribe.

65

A

To steal fire and invite the others to join his tribe.

73
Q

Simon begins hallucinating that the “Lord of the Flies” is speaking to him. It says… “Fancy thinking the beast is something you can hunt and kill… I’m a part of you…we are going to have fun on this island.” What is the Lord of the Flies saying here? (chapter 8)

A

That the beast is really just the devil/evil that’s already in everyone including Simon and that the devil will do bad things on the island.

74
Q

Beelzebub, another name for satan/the devil, is sometimes called the lord of the flies. Those who follow Abrahamic religions believe that Jesus Christ wandered through the desert for 40 days and 40 nights while being tempted by satan. How is Simon’s run in with the Lord of the Flies similar? (chapter 8)

A

Simon is being tempted by the devil just like Jesus was. Also Simon acts like Jesus when he shares meat with Piggy by the fire when no one else would (breaking bread with him), and when he gives Piggy his glasses back after they fall off (giving the blind their sight back).

75
Q

What does Simon see when he gets to the top of the mountain? (chapter 9)

A

The dead man.

76
Q

What are Ralph and Piggy doing back at the beach? (chapter 9)

A

Bathing.

77
Q

What does it say about the state of their “civilization” that Jack says the conch doesn’t count anymore? (chapter 9)

A

It doesn’t have order and is chaotic.

78
Q

“A thing was crawling out of the forest…the beast stumbled in the circle…Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill…the beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over his face…it was crying out…something about a body on a hill.” What happened in the pig circle?

A

The wind picked him up and took him off the island.

Q

Who is left in Ralph’s tribe? (chapter 10)

A

Piggy, SamnEric, and some littluns.

81
Q

What is Ralph’s reaction when Piggy says he’s still chief, and why do you think he reacts that way? (chapter 10)

A

The laughs because now he’s barely the chief of anybody.

82

A

They said it was dark, they were scared, and that it was an accident.

A rock that can be knocked onto someone by pulling a lever.

85
Q

A

He tied him up for hours and then beat him.

86
Q

How is Jack using fear to make his tribe loyal to him? (chapter 10)

A

By beating a member of his tribe without stating a reason.

87
Q

What does Jack realise he needs if he wants to go hunting for another pig? (chapter 10)

A

Fire to cook the pig.

88
Q

What does Ralph’s tribe hear outside when they’re trying to fall asleep? (chapter 10)

A

Jack’s tribe taking the fire and Jack calling for Piggy.

89
Q

What happens between the two tribes at the end of the chapter? (chapter 10)

What does Jack leave with?

A

They all get into a giant fight.

Piggy’s glasses.

90
Q

Why doesn’t Jack want/take the conch? (chapter 10)

A

It was used for order and having civil meetings but Jack’s tribe isn’t civil so they don’t respect the conch anymore.

91
Q

Why do you think at the end of the chapter Golding says that Jack was now “chief in truth”? (chapter 10)

A

Because Jack showed strength and power when he raided the other tribe.

92
Q

What is Piggy planning to do when they confront Jack? (chapter 11)

A

He plans to make Jack return his glasses and to lecture him on morality.

93
Q

Why do you think Piggy is so desperately clinging to the conch? (chapter 11)

A

Because Piggy still holds the false belief that it has it’s power.

94
Q

What do the boys decide to do before they go to Jack’s tribe? (Chapter 11)

A

They decide to bathe.

95
Q

98
Q

What do Jack and his tribe do to Ralph, SamnEric, and Piggy? (chapter 11)

A

They tie them up and take their spears.

99
Q

Why do you think Jack’s tribe hesitates to follow his orders? (chapter 11)

A

Because his orders are cruel.

100
Q

What happens between Jack and Ralph? (chapter 11)

A

They start fighting.

101
Q

What happens to the conch? (chapter 11)

A

It shatters.

102
Q

What happens to Piggy? (chapter 11)

A

He falls to his death after Ralph pulls the lever that makes a rock fall.

103
Q

Roger comes down from his post and looks at what he’s done and Golding notes that the “hangman’s horror clung around him”. What do you think he means? (chapter 11)

A

That Roger feels really guilty for having had killed a man.

104
Q

Ralph says that “This is not Bill. This was a savage whose image refused to blend with that ancient picture of a boy in shorts and a shirt”. What does that mean? (chapter 12)

A

That the ‘boys’ in Jack’s tribe were no longer civil and more like animals than humans.

105
Q

Golding note that “The breaking of the conch and the deaths of Piggy and Simon lay over the island like a vapor.” Why is the destruction of the conch and the deaths so significant? (chapter 12)

A

The conch breaking is significant because it symbolizes the destruction of order since it used to have the power to keep order.

The deaths are so significant because the civil are dying while the savage remain.

106
Q

Who does Ralph find keeping watch? (chapter 12)

A

SamnEric

107
Q

What is Jack planning to do tomorrow?

A

To hunt Ralph.
