Semester 1 Exam Flashcards
Characterizing any living thing on earth
organism
What is ecology?
the study of interactions among organisms and their environment
Why is water important to life?
All organisms need water to survive
Where is most water found?
In the ocean (salt water)
Describe the Troposphere:
- nearest earth
- weather happens here
- climate (typical weather/over span of time)
Describe the stratosphere:
- above troposphere
- planes fly here, lower pressure
- ozone- absorbs UV rays
Describe the mesosphere:
- extends to an altitude of about 80 km
- coldest layer of the atmosphere (temp. as low as -93 C)
Describe the thermosphere:
- farthest from the Earth’s surface
- nitrogen and oxygen absorb solar radiation, resulting in temperatures above 2,000°C
- The air in the thermosphere is so thin that air particles rarely collide, so little heat is transferred (Would not feel hot to us)
- Nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the lower region of the thermosphere
Lithosphere means…
land
Atmosphere means…
air
hydrosphere means…
water
There is _____% land on Earth
75 percent
Biosphere means…
life
non-living
ex: rocks, soil, water, air, temperature, pH, oxygen, nitrogen
Abiotic
living
ex: plants, animals, humans, bacteria, fungus, algae, Protozoa
Biotic
one particular type of organism
species
all organisms of species in a given area
population
many populations in a given area
community
