Lexical relations
Semantic relations that exist between words
Synonymy
Words that have similar meanings. There is often a broad overlap, but probing reveals different meanings.
Antonymy
Words that have opposite meanings.
Ungradable antonyms
Antonyms in which the truth of one requires the falsity of the other.
Gradable antonyms
Meanings are contrar but they may exist on a continuum. Falseness of one does not necessarily guarantee the truth of the other.
Connotation
a theory of meaning in which the meaning of a word is simply a set of associations it invokes.
Componential analysis
a theory ased ont he idea that meaning can be decomposed into smaller semantic units called features.
Sentential semantics
semantic relations that exist between sentences and phrases
paraphrase
two sentences with very similar meanings
contradiction
two sentences in which the truth of one requires the falsity of the other
Entailment
two sentences in which the truth of the first implies the truth of the second, but the truth of the second does not necessarily imply the truth of the first.
Evidentiality markers
indication in a sentence that conveys your confidence in the truth
