Denotations
Factual and objective meanings (e.g. word ‘rose’ denotes a popular type of flower)
Connotations
Personal and subjective meanings we attach to words/objects (eg. ‘Rose’ connotes love and passion)
Euphemism
Substitution of polite expression for one thought to be offensive or blunt
Dysphemism
Harsh/blunt expression (saying something straight up)
Semantic field
Multiple words and phrases in a paragraph relating to a singular meaning (extended metaphors)
Hypernym
The general term for something (e.g. cheese)
Hyponymy
The more specific term underneath a hypernym (e.g. cheddar, mozzarella etc.)
Antonyms
Lexical terms with opposite meanings
Synonyms
Lexical items with similar semantic value
Idiom
Commonly said phrases
