Self Study Flashcards
What is SOHCAHTOA?
SOH… Sine:
sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
…CAH…
Cosine: cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
…TOA
Tangent: tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent
Lbf to psi relationship?
(lbf (pounds force) is simply another term for mass/area).
lbf acting on an area will give pressure per unit of that area.
Psi = Pounds/Square inch.
If you have say 144pounds standing on an area of 1ft x 1ft it is equal to 144 pounds (force) per square foot.
To change to psi, 1ft² = 12” x 12” = 144in².
Your 144lb/ft² now becomes 144lbs/144in² = 1lb/in² = 1psi.
So, psi = mass (lbs) ÷ Area (in²)
What is the law of cosines?
c^2 = a^2+b^2 - 2ab cos C
What is Pythagorean theorem?
For right triangle
a2=b2+c2
What is the moment of inertia?
It is resistance to rotation.
Remember the youtube video with a wheel and a disc. The wheel is harder to stop rotating because the mass if further from the axis.
Kip
A kip is a US customary unit of force. It equals 1000 pounds-force, used primarily by American architects and engineers to measure engineering loads. Although uncommon, it is occasionally also considered a unit of weight, equal to 1000 pounds, i.e., one half of a short ton. One use is as a unit of deadweight to compute shipping charges.
1 kip = 4448.2216 N = 4.4482216 kN
The design requirements for structural steel are established by what organization?
American Institute of Steel Construction
AISC
They publish the AISC Manual
For the Vignette.
The maximum beam span between columns is how many feet?
40 feet max between columns
What is modulus of elasticity?
Within the elastic limit, the constant ratio of the unit stress in a material to the corresponding units strain.
In a wide flange member, such as W14 x 43, what does the 14 and the 43 stand for?
The 14 stands for height in inches and the 43 stands for pounds of steel per linear foot.
What is the section modulus
The stiffness of the material
What is moments of inertia
The stiffness of the shape. ( depth helps by a lot!)
In rigid vs flexible diaphragm how does force get distributed?
Flexible distribute equally.
Rigid - distribute proportionally.
