Self Report Flashcards
what is a self report technique
when pp’s are asked to provide information about themselves
define an interview
pp’s are asked questions from the researcher and answer them. two types, structured and unstructured
define a questionnaire
pp’s are sent a set of question which they answer. two types, open and closed questionaries
define an open questionnaire
questions are phrased so pp’s can answer however they want. no restrictions. produces qualitative data
define a closed questionnaire
questions are phrased that limits pp’s responses to fixed options. eg, yes, no, maybe. produces quantitative data
evaluation of a closed questionnaire (easy to analyse/compare)
because the data set is often large, and closed questionnaires produce quantitative data, analysis can be quick and easy allowing for comparisons to be made
what are important considerations when designing an interview/questionnaire
avoid complex terminology
avoid leading questions
define a structured interview?
researcher asks a pre-reaped set of closed questions to pp’s/ produces quantitative data
evaluation of structured interviews
because all pp’s are asked the sam questions, the researcher can easily compare responses between pp’s
define an unstructured interview
there is no setlist of questions, so researcher can ask whatever they like, like a conversation. produces qualitative data
