Kohut’s view on how psychopathology develops
A
- when the person’s environment doesn’t provide the necessary experience to feel human and connected to society
- moving through life without meaning
- something wrong in the way the individual perceives himself

- selfobjects who respond positive to and support the child
- selfobjects who a powerful and who the child can look up to
- selfobjects who are similar to the child to evoke a feeling of likeness

A
-in a safe environment, the child learns to tolerate frustration and disappointment and internalizes what works

Kohut’s perspective on psychoanalysis
A
- EMPATHY
- transferences (mirroring, idealizing, alter ego/twinship)
- analyst being viewed as extension of the patient– so that the patient can develop a more cohesive, rich, sense or self and be able to endure disappointments

- mirroring (analyst viewed as nurturing, patient feels seen, more real)
- idealizing (analyst viewed as powerful and wonderful and patient is as well because of the connection to analyst)
- alter ego/twinship (patient years to feel a likeness with the analyst)
