Motivations for self-presentation
Obtain social benefits- achieve social goals- ex. Job, protect self image. Provide meaning- make us feel like a valuable part of our culture. Promote self improvement- if we engage in self-improvement, eventually we are improved.
Audience segregation
Keeping different audiences separated in order to perform consistently before each audience
Nerd-party Animal Study
P’s interacted with each group separatel, then when groups were together- used middle of the road statements
Lying
Bending the truth in order to protect our own face, and other people’s face
Lying Record Study
75% of lies were aimed at saving face- 50% our own face, 25% someone else’s face
Behavioral mimicry
Automatically mimicking the posture, mannerisms, and speech style of the person with whom you’re interacting
Affiliation and Mimicry Study
P’s with an affiliation goal, activated either consciously or unconsciously, touched their faces more often than p’s without the goal. (mimicking can be a way to create rapport and liking.)
Self Monitoring
High self monitors: social chameleons, adjust appearance and behavior to fit social norm and expectations
Low self-monitors: ignoring social expectations, presenting themselves more consistently according to their own desires or inner states.
