What is Self and Identity?
Shorthand expressions for an ensemble of psychological experiences (thoughts, feelings, motives etc..) that reflect and contribute to a person’s understanding of his or her place in a social world” (Hewstone et al., 2008)
What is Self-Awareness?
- A psychological state in which one is aware of oneself as an object.
- Public and/or Private Self Consciousness (Carver & Scheier, 1981)
What is Self-perception theory (Bem, 1972)?
One way we might be able to understand ourselves is by ‘stepping outside of ourselves’ and looking at our own behavior?
What is Importance of Self-Awareness?
Caring for others involves empathic listening and awareness of the needs and feelings of patients / people as well as one’s own (Mcleod, 2003)
What is Self-concept?
One’s knowledge of and thoughts about the set of qualities attributed to the self
What is Self-reference Effect?
When info is relevant to our self-concept > process it quickly & remember it well.
What is Self-schema?
Mental template by which we organize our worlds
What is Self complexity?
Self-aspects & interrelatedness- implications for wellbeing
What is Spotlight effect?
Over estimating the extent that others are noticing and
evaluating us
What is Illusion of transparency?
The tendency for people to overestimate the
extent others can recognize their internal thoughts, feelings, attitudes and intentions
What is Impact bias?
Tendency for people to overestimate the length or intensity of future feeling states
What is Self-serving bias?
is where people have a tendency to (gather information,
process information) in such a manner as to advance our self-interest and support our preexisting views
What is Semantic memory?
knowledge of general facts and concepts > give meaning to
information
-Facts about our lives can often guide us to certain time periods and places
What is Episodic memory?
- Events experienced at a particular time or place
- Early formulation - Experienced events- contextual
- Shares many features to semantic, which it grew out of
What is Autonoetic consciousness?
Is the human ability to mentally place ourselves in the past, future, or in counterfactual situations, and thus to be able to examine our own thoughts
