A
- eyes roll upward
- loss of LOC
- contraction of the entire body where arms are flexed
- BP and HR increases
- loss of swallowing reflex
- apnea–> cyanosis

A
- violent jerking movements of the body
- rhythmic contraction and relaxation
- foaming in the mouth
- incontinence
- movement gradually slow and then stop

A
- cerebral edema
- hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia
- hypernatremia
- alkalosis

what is the postictal state and how long does it last?
A
postictal state lasts 30 minutes and this is where the patient is semiconscious and arouses with difficulty

what is important for a nurse to do during an ongoing seizure?
A
- protect from injury
- maintain patent airway by laying patient in a side lying position
- be prepared to suction oral secretion and put nothing in child’s mouth
- note onset, time, and characteristics of seizure

A
- maintain the side lying position
- neuro checks done every 15 minutes
- check inside of mouth

what is status epilepticus?
A
one seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes or 2 seizures within 5 minutes
