seizures Flashcards
focal- retain awareness
seizure activity starts in one area of brain
no impairment of consciousness; may have movement of body parts or an aura
focal- altered awareness
impairment of consciousness; can spread to both hemispheres starts in one area of brain
partial seizure
start in one part of one hemisphere generally in temporal or frontal lobe
can be simple or complex
based on whether a person remains fully conscious
unknown seizures
insufficient evidence to classify as focal, generalized or both
generalized seizure
activity involves both hemispheres at same time
generally no aura at start
tonic- clonic
generalized, affect whole brain
begin with rigidity (tonic phase)
folowed by repetitive clonic activity of all extremities
tonic
muscle stiffening; dilation of pupils; altered resp patterns; body becomes stiff person ay fall backward
seizure ususally lasts less than 1 min
recovery rapid
clonic
jerking movement w muscles on both sides of body
absence
short episodes of staring and loss of awareness
atonic
sudden loss of muscle tone
resulting in fall or drop to ground
rapid recovery
myoclonic
jerking (myoclonic) movements of a muscle or muscle group
w. out loss of consciousness
