Seizure Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
seizures
A
paroxysmal (sudden) and excessive exitation and sychronation of population of cortical neurons in the brain that cause a variety of clinical manifestations
2
Q
epilepsy
A
a disease characterized by spontaneous recurrent seizures (several types)
3
Q
epileptogenesis
A
sequence of events that coverts a normal neuronal network into an eplieptic network
4
Q
epilepsy epidemiology
A
- lifetime prevelance of** 1-3%**
- up to **5-10% **of population will suffer a seizure
- the* thrid most common neruological disorder*
- localized (focal or partial seizure)
- spread to cause a secondary generalized sezure
- may affect all cortical neurons simultaneouslu (primary generalized seuzure)
- highest frequnce of newly identified cases occur among children < 5 years (50-100 cases/100,000) and** adults > 65 years of age** (70-50 cases/100,000)
5
Q
epilepsy physiology
A
- charaterized by **abnormal neuronal exictability **
- random firing cells
- small groups of abnormal neurons undergo prolonged depolarizatiosn associated with rapid firing (repeated AP)
- leads to abnormal synchronization
- altered neuronal microenviroment
- imbalance between* exictatory (go) signals and inhibitory (stop)*
