1
Q

Q

epilepsy epidemiology

A
  • lifetime prevelance of** 1-3%**
  • up to **5-10% **of population will suffer a seizure
  • the* thrid most common neruological disorder*
  • localized (focal or partial seizure)
  • spread to cause a secondary generalized sezure
  • may affect all cortical neurons simultaneouslu (primary generalized seuzure)
  • highest frequnce of newly identified cases occur among children < 5 years (50-100 cases/100,000) and** adults > 65 years of age** (70-50 cases/100,000)

Q

epilepsy physiology

A
  • charaterized by **abnormal neuronal exictability **
  • random firing cells
  • small groups of abnormal neurons undergo prolonged depolarizatiosn associated with rapid firing (repeated AP)
  • leads to abnormal synchronization
  • altered neuronal microenviroment
  • imbalance between* exictatory (go) signals and inhibitory (stop)*
