Q

Compare the 2 types of seismic waves.

A

p-waves: faster, travel through both solids and liquids, arrives first
s-waves: slower, travel only through solids, arrives second.

Q

Why do the waves change their direction sometimes gradually and sometimes suddenly?

A

Soundwaves will be reflected in some waves are affected, this can depend on the boundary the waves is hitting and/or travelling to and from. For example, if a P-wavehits the outer core Boundry sounds it will be reflected as they change from the different densities. This can make the wave travel abruptly or gradually.
