seismic waves Flashcards
what natural event causes seismic waves to be produced?
earthquakes
what can P waves travel through
both solids and liquids
what can s waves travel through?
solids (not liquids)
are P waves transverse or longitudinal?
longitudinal
are S waves transverse or longitudinal?
Transverse
are Surface waves transverse or longitudinal?
longitudinal
are S or P waves faster?
P waves are faster
How do seismometer stations determine the locations of epicentres?
The station detects the seismic P and S waves and measures the time differential, which is used to calculate the distance they have travelled
what happens to the speed of seismic waves as they travel towards the earths mantle?
their speed increases
how is the S wave shadow zone formed
S waves cannot travel through liquid so cannot travel through the earths liquid part of it’s core
