Sandstones, siltstones, and mudstones formed in glacial periods. Unconsolidated material prone to erosion.

Cliff drainage, as the cliffs eroded away and the pipe system collapsed.

Straighter due to the erosion of Formby point and the accretion of surrounding areas.

Why are the pine plantations so damaging to the environment?
Pine needles are acidic and will decrease the pH of the soil outcompeting native species causing a decrease in biodiversity. When the fall over they have shallow and wide spreading routes so they expose the top soil to erosional processes.
Why are the pine plantations important?
They support the conservation of red squirrels.
How were the Tobacco Dunes formed?
In 1956, The British Nicotine Company began to dump 22,000 tons of waste tobacco on fields where it would dry out. Then when it was dry they would mix it in with the sand in the sand dune system.
