seeds and germination Flashcards
what are the two types of seed
1) monocotyledon
2) dicotyledon
what are the conditions needed for germination
1) water
2) oxygen
3) temperature
why is water important for seed germination
nutrients in dry tissue need to be rehydrated and the water cracks the seed coat allowing roots to grow
why is oxygen important in seed germination
for aerobic respiration as large amounts of ATP are needed for growth
why is temperature important for seed germination
provides optimum temp for enzyme activity
what is Gibberellin
a plant growth hormone
outline the role of gibberellin in germination
1) water is imbibed through a micropyle causing the cotyledon to swell and the Testa to split increasing oxygen for aerobic respiration
2) the water activates the gene for gibberellin synthesis
3) gibberellin diffuses to the aleurone layer which contains proteins and induces the synthesis of amylase
4) amylase breakdowns starch into maltose in the endosperm
5) the maltose is used by the embryo in aerobic respiration when converted into glucose which is used for the growth of the radicle and plumule
