Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
Conglomerate
Coarse-grained sedimentary rock composed of rounded fragments, (greater than 2 mm) within a matrix of finer grained material cemented together
Basal Conglomerate
A conglomerate deposited on an erosion surface and constituting the bottom layer of a stratigraphic series.
Sandstone
Clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized minerals
Most is composed of quartz and/ or Feldspar
Shale
Fine-grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed of clay minerals and silt sized particles of other minerals.
Quartz and Calcite
Greywacke
Variety of sandstone
Poorly sorted angular grains, Dark Color
Quartz and Feldspar set in a compact clay-fine matrix
Arkose
Type of Sandstone
Contains at least 25% Feldspar sand, and Quartz
Pink in color
Limestone
Composed largely of Calcite and Aragonite
Most composed of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral
Dolomite
Sedimentary rock composed of dolomite (Calcium magnesium carbonate)
Also called Dolostone
Chert
Fine-grained silica rich
May contain small fossils
Feels smooth
Clastic
Rocks composed of broken pieces of older rocks
Sorting
Distribution or grain sizes
Order of Sedimentary Rocks based on Grain Size: Large to Small
Conglomerate- Breccia- Graywacke- Sandstone- Siltstone- Mudstone- Shale
