Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
sedimentary rock definition
Sedimentary rocks are made from material derived from the breakdown of pre-existing rocks and organic matter. They are normally formed in rivers, lakes and seas.
what do sedimentary rocks contain
Because sedimentary rocks are made from the build-up of sediment, they contain layers called strata, The junction between each layer is known as a bedding plane
formation
Sediment is turned into rock by the process of lithification. During this process, the great weight of the layers of sediment compacts the grains of rock together. Under pressure, minerals such as calcite and silica leak from the grains and stick them together to form solid rock.
types of sedimentary rock
Organic and Inorganic
organic sedimentary rock example
An example of an organic sedimentary rock is limestone. Limestone can be found in The Burren Co Clare. Formed 300-350 MYA.
Limestone is the most common rock type in Ireland
organic sedimentary rock
Organic sedimentary rocks are made from the remains of dead plants and animals on the sea floor. During lithification the great weight of sediment causes calcite from shells and skeletons to cement the grains together forming solid rock.
inorganic sedimentary rock
Inorganic sedimentary rock is formed when particles of igneous, metamorphic or other sedimentary rocks build up underwater and are cemented together by silica
inorganic sedimentary rock example
An example of inorganic sedimentary rock is sandstone. Sandstone can be found in the Caha Mountains Co Cork. Sandstone was formed around 400 MYA. Most common type of sandstone in Ireland is old red sandstone.
