Sedimentary Flashcards
Bed
is a sedimentary rock that has been laid down under a specific set of environmental conditions
Bedding plane
is a line that separates each bed and is parallel to the surface of deposition
Bed differences
Colour, grain size, grain shape, sorting, composition, bed thickness
Laminations
Thin beds
Mechanically formed sedimentary rocks
Clastic
Chemically formed sedimentary rocks
Chemically precipitated - non clastic
Biologically formed sedimentary rocks
Rocks formed from living organisms
Clasts
These are the dominant larger fragments that usually wake up the majority of the rock
Matrix
This is made up of finer grains that occur between the clasts
Cement
Often there is a third type of grain present, too small to be seen by the naked eye
Unconformity
Represents a break in the layers of rocks when no sediment was deposited
Angular unconformity
Rocks above and below the unconformity are not parallel
Parallel unconformity
Rocks above and below the unconformity are parallel
