why did weber think that the protestant reformation led to the disenchantment of the world
he argues that the protestant reformation is responsible for taking out magical and religious ways of thinking, starting off the rationalisation process.
what is meant by disengagement
the process of the functions of religion being transferred to other insitutions like the state, becoming disconnected from wider society - the church loses the influence it once had on education, welfare and law.
four changes to religion in the uk since 1851
- decline in population going to church
- religion has become more diverse
- fewer baptisms and church weddings
- increase in avg age of churchgoers

what evidence is there to support the fact that britain is becoming a secular society
- church attendance in decline
- decline in the number of people with religious affiliations
- religious beliefs are declining
- the influence of religion as a social institution has declined
what is meant by a bogus baptism
the amount of older children being baptised has increased due to the fact that many faith schools, whom are higher performing, only accept religious students. therefore people get baptised not because they are religious but because it gives them an entry ticket into a good school
how has modernisation affected religious beliefs
a decline in tradition and a replacement with rational and scientific ways of thinking have undermined the importance and value of religious beliefs
rationalisation
rational ways of thinking and acting that replace religious ways of thinking and acting
what is the medieval catholic worldview
the view of the world as an enchanted garden - angels, devils and medievil creatures were believed to be present on earth, changing the course of events through their supernatural powers.
what is the technological worldview
it has replaced religious and supernatural reasons of why things happen - now seen as a result of technology for example when a plane crashes with a loss of many lives it is unlikely to be regarded as the work of evil spirits.
what is structural differentiation
PARSONS- a process of specialisation that occurs with the development of industrial society - seperate, specialised institutions develop to carry put functions previously performed by one single institution
