Q

Parsons and secularisation?

A

Argues structural differentiation is the reason that disengagement is happening. The functions and the roles that the church once had are being taken over by other institutions, for example education has now been taken over by the state and the church has less influence over it.

Q

What is Davies argument against secularisation?

A

Religion is not declining,, but becoming more privatised, it is now part of the private sphere rather than the public so it appears it is having less influence but it still is. People still believe but they don’t belong anymore, for example they still have the same beliefs but don’t practice the religion by going to church.

Q

What is Norris and Ingleharts argument about secularisation?

A

Western countries need religion less because they are more secure therefore don’t need it for safety and reassurance, however other countries which are less secure and economically develop still rely on religion as much as before. People who are more relatively deprived also still rely on religion for hope and answers to their deprivation.

Religion isn’t disappearing but rather it goes in a cycle, as one religion will decline another will be born and therefore rise, meaning there will always be religion in society just in different forms.
