Sections 5.6-5.8 Flashcards
Diffusion
- the spontaneous spreading of molecules or ions, and it is an essential way in which substances move into, through, and out of cells
What does the speed of diffusion depend on?
Size, temperature, concentration, charge, and pressure.
What does the speed of diffusion depend on? Size
It takes more energy to move a large object than it does to move a small one. Thus, smaller molecules diffuse more quickly than the larger ones.
What does the speed of diffusion depend on?
Temperature
Diffusion
the spontaneous spreading of molecules or ions, and it’s an essential way in which substances move into, through, and out of cells
The speed at which diffusion occurs depends on what factors?
Size, temperature, concentration, charge, and pressure.
The speed at which diffusion occurs depends on what factors? Size
It takes more energy to move a large object than it does to move a small one. Thus, smaller molecules diffuse faster than larger ones.
The speed at which diffusion occurs depends on what factors? Temperature
Atoms and molecules “jiggle” faster at higher temperatures so they collide more often. Thus, the higher the temperature, the faster the rate of diffusion.
The speed at which diffusion occurs depends on what factors? Concentration
A difference in solute concentration between adjacent regions of a solution is called a concentration gradient. Solutes tend to diffuse “down” their concentration gradient, from a region of higher concentration to one of lower consentration
