Location of Jesus’ birth
- Unknown (Bethlehem, about 6 miles from Jerusalem)
- Layers of tradition obscure
- The first record is from the 3rd c. when, Helena’s, Constantine’s mother, had erected the Church of the Nativity over a cavern.
- Traditional site can be visited today.
- As we shall see, the location of Jesus’ birth was not that important to the early Christians.
The Census
Jews had a property tax as decreed by Caesar Augustus. Before tax was collected a census had to be taken. Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem because their legal inheritance was there.
Dating of Jesus’ Birth
- In 525 A.D. Pope John I asked the Scythian monk, Dionysius, to prepare a calendar for the western church.
- The monk worked from the common reckoning point, the founding of Rome, and came up with January 1, 754.
- The problem: he was off by about 4 years.
- From the 3rd c. onward, December 25th came to be celebrated as Jesus’ birthdate.
3 events that assist in the dating of Jesus’ birth
- The star of the ancient wise men
- Death of Herod the Great, eclipse of the moon
- Enrollment of population by Quirinius
Is December 25th correct?
- Some place the birth in a range of dates in the winter months
- Was born either in either December 5th or January 4th BC.
- Dec. 25th had originally been a Roman holiday, Saturnalia, a feast of merriment at the end of
the year. - The date is not as important as that He was born and completed his task on earth!
The virginal birth
- More accurately, virginal conception, since Jesus was born like every other child
- Conception due to Holy Spirit
- Matthew sees this as a fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14
- Source of the story was Mary
The birth itself
- Lack of information
- Some think suppose Joseph or a midwife helped; others don’t
- Self-delivery was possible
