  2. Layers of tradition obscure
  3. The first record is from the 3rd c. when, Helena’s, Constantine’s mother, had erected the Church of the Nativity over a cavern.

The Census

A

Jews had a property tax as decreed by Caesar Augustus. Before tax was collected a census had to be taken. Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem because their legal inheritance was there.

Dating of Jesus’ Birth

  1. In 525 A.D. Pope John I asked the Scythian monk, Dionysius, to prepare a calendar for the western church.
  2. The monk worked from the common reckoning point, the founding of Rome, and came up with January 1, 754.
  3. The problem: he was off by about 4 years.
  4. From the 3rd c. onward, December 25th came to be celebrated as Jesus’ birthdate.
