Section1-2 Flashcards
The central core of an atom
Nucleus
The basic particle from which all elements are made
Atom
A positively charged particle that is part of an atoms nucleus
Proton
positive = proton
A region of an atom in which electrons of the same energy are likely to be found
Energy level
says energy
A negatively charged particle that is found outside of an atom
Electron
negative
A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge
Neutron
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic number
( number of atoms )
An atom with the same number of protons and different number of neutrons from other atoms of the same element
Isotope
The sum of protons and the neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass number
sum
The average mass of all the isotopes of an element
Atomic mass
average number
A chart of the elements showing a repeating pattern of their properties
Periodic table
A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
Period
Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also called a family.
Group
One or two letter representation of an element
Chemical symbol
A gas like sate of matter consisting of a mixture of free electrons and atoms that are stripped of their electrons.
Plasma
