Section Three Flashcards
“T t o c.”
“The tone of confession.”
George once got Lennie to throw himself into a river but now feels really guilty about abusing his power.
S: “G d n n s t b a n f.”
“Guy don’t need no sense to be a nice fella.”
Slim sees beyond Lennie’s difficulties.
S: “L a a b m.”
“Lennie ain’t a bit mean.”
Again, despite his appearance Lennie is very gentle.
G: “T g r i […] H j w t t t r d, l h w t p t p”
“That girl rabbits in […] He jus’ wanted to touch that red dress, like he wants to pet them pups”
George describes Weed. Interesting use of rabbits and also show that Lennie really does have no malicious intents.
S: “J l a k.”
“Jes’ like a kid”
Describing Lennie.
C: “H d g n e a c t w”
“He don’t give nobody else a chance to win”
Carlson describes Crooks. He has learned that he should take every chance to win but the others think he should know his place.
S: “I w s s m i I g o a a c.”
“I wisht somebody’d shoot me if I got old an’ a cripple.”
Slim tries to get Candy to let Carlson shoot his dog. Reflective of the nature of the ranch - anything that can’t be used for profit should be discarded.
C: “R b o t h.”
“Right back of the head.”
The parallels between Lennie and the dog continue…
“H d n s h h o i.”
“He did not surrender his hold on it.”
When Whit sees a letter from someone he recognises in a magazine, it is a symbol of hope. He is unwilling to let it go and potentially have his dream go with it.
“A l C s s a h, ‘A - t ‘i.’”
“‘At last Candy said softly and hopelessly, ‘Awright - take ‘im.’
One gets the sense Candy isn’t happy about giving his dog over. He was his only companion.
S: “T a s”
“Take a shovel”
Carlson appears to be so detached from other people that he forgets that he needs to bury the dog, not just leave him out in the open.
C: “M S.”
“Mr Slim.”
What Crooks calls Slim. Perhaps a sign of how highly regarded Slim is - or the power that white people had over black people.
G: “T g b a b m a h.”
“There’s gonna be a bad mess about her.”
Again, George predicts future trouble with Curley’s Wife that he is powerless to stop.
G: “A n p f a g, e l h.”
“Ain’t no place for a girl, especially like her.”
Shows attitudes to women - they should stay out the way of men’s work.
“T t t h n r b i w c t.”
“This thing they had never really believed in was coming true.”
When Candy offers to help buy the land, George and Lennie’s dream appears to be about to come true.
