Section Review - Unit B Flashcards
What did Antoine Lavoisier discover?
known of as the father of chemistry because he named most of the elements in the periodic table
What did John Dalton discover ?
discovered the atom - Billiard model - The elements masses are all different from one another. Atoms are solid spheres
What did J.J Thomson discover?
first person to discover that electrons were negatively charged particles, and that atoms were slightly positive.
Describe J.J Thomson Raisin bun model?
That the atom was a positive sphere with electrons throughout it like raisins in a baked bun
Describe Rutherford’s discoveries?
Atoms were mainly empty space, and discovered the nucleus slightly positively charged.
Describe Bohr’s model
He discovered that electrons orbit the nucleus in circular orbit.
Describe Chadwick’s discovery?
He discovered that the protons and neutrons were in the nucleus. The protons and neutrons are the same mass.
Describe Democritus discovery?
Materials were made up of different atoms, and when paired together they had unique properties.
Describe Huntaro Nagaoka discovery?
He discovered that the electrons orbit the nucleus, like the sun planets orbiting the sun
What properties distinguish metals from non-metals
Metals conduct electricity, shiny, ductile, malleable
non-metals - dull, cannot conduct electricity, brittle, solids gases
What are the melting and boiling points for solids, liquids and gases.
liquid - the melting temp has to below room temperature, and the boiling point has to be above room temperature
solid - they both have to be about room temperature
gas - they have to be below room temperature
what is the difference between a group and a period in a periodic table
a group is a vertical line
a period is horizontal line
What is an alkali metal ?
Most reactive metals, when you go down a group it becomes more reactive, reacts to air and water.
What is an alkali earth metal?
Not as reactive to alkali metals, it also reacts with air and water. `
What is a Halogen?
not as reactive, non metals
