Section Review Flashcards
Where are the stop valves located? What is the purpose of the valves ? Where are the lead lines?
The stop valves are located at the front of the steamer, the purpose is to isolate steam to st84, and the lead lines are on the mid deck upstream of the stop valves
What are the two sources of water that you have in the surface condenser?
- Condensate/polished H20
- CTW
State the hazards to plant personnel when operating around high pressure steam and or hot condensate
Burns, noise, water hammer
State the steps necessary to put the cooling tower water system in service, on the following systems.
A. The a and B vacuum skid (plate and frame)
B. Exciter cooler
A. Open ctw inlet/outlet on E8406A/B. Open inlet/outlet on seal water E-8405A/B.
B. Open inlet/outlet on E – 8409 and vent discharge through tube drains.
State where can the contaminated hotwell condensate go when it is dumped?
It’s lined up to the polished water tanks but it can goto the West ditch and condensate tanks
State what role the surface condenser has in the hotwell condensate system
Condenses exhaust steam from ST 84 and provides cooling from cooling tower to maintain vacuum
Briefly described the function or purpose of each of the following valves.
A. P 8401A suction and discharge valves.
B. P 8401A recirculation valve.
C. P 8401A condensate dump valve.
D. Check valve
A. Isolation valves
B. Maintain hotwell level and flow
C. Dumps on high conductivity
D. Prevents backflow
State the purpose of the hotwell makeup condensate line.
Adds polished water to hotwell for st84 start up
State the purpose of the oil conditioning system.
Removes water and impurities from oil.
Describe the purpose of the jacking oil system.
Provides extra oil pressure to keep the shaft from “sagging” during start up shutdown of st84
Describe the operation and function of E-8402.
Condenses gland seal leak off and sends it back to the condenser. gland seal fans provide vacuum to support steam flow
State the purpose of E 8402 drain line level switch high
Alarms when high level in gland seal condenser
Describe the hazards associated with improper steam line warm-up
Water hammer
State what is used for cooling on the vacuum skid?
Aux cooling water
State the function of the following items
A. Inter condenser condensate trap
B. Steam jets on vacuum skids
A. Maintains level in inter condenser and returns water to hotwell condenser.
B. Creates vacuum using 300 pound steam establishes/maintains vacuum in condenser.
Describe the function of the hydraulic oil on the ST 84 turning gear
Used to control steam control valves, opens stop valves, engages turning gear pinion
State the hazards of hydrogen
Highly flammable with oxygen
State the hazards of CO2
Asphyxiation
State why hydrogen purity in the generator is important
Cooling efficiency keeps from damaging windings and produces more megawatts
State hazard involved while performing this job
A. Purging the generator with CO2 from hydrogen.
A. Oxygen displacement/valve alignment.
State the results of low hydrogen pressure if it continued to be low
Less cooling, seal oil could get into the generator
Explain why the seal oil pressure is run higher than the hydrogen pressure
To trap the hydrogen in the generator
State the reason why it’s a good idea to check the hydrogen bank pressure each time you make a round
To ensure adequate supply/identify leaks early
Describe the purpose of D 8405 and D 8406
Used to de gas hydrogen/oil mixture from generator oil seals
State the control range for the hydrogen to seal oil differential pressure
8-10 psi
State the normal control range for the seal oil pressure
70-80 psi
List the hazards involved with work being done on the bridge crane
Slip strips and falls, falling debris, electrical shock
Explain the purpose of the bridge crane
Assist with turbine outages lifts equipment related to turbine
State the permit limits for blowdown water from cooling tower.
7 to 9 pH
0 to 45 TSS
0 to 50 TOC
Describe the location of CT 84 blow downs and explain how they are used and controlled
West side of polisher building and it’s controlled on conductivity readings
List the tanks and vessels associated with the cooling tower area (detergent, corrosion inhibitor)
Sulfuric acid, bleach and Nalco tanks
A. state the upper and lower limits for cooling tower pH
B. list the results of high ph excursion and low ph excursion.
7.5-7.8
Low ph- corrosion of condenser tubes
High pH- plugging of exchanger tubes
Explain the procedure for startup of a cooling tower circulating pump and putting the 54 inch cooling tower water header and associated equipment service
First verify cooling tower level, verify proper lineup, check pump oil levels, verify discharge vents and condenser vents open, check discharge valve position is at 20%, verify cooling tower riser is open, start pump, verify sealwater flow, close vents Open discharge 100%, balance risers to fans
List the steps for preparing the cooling tower fan for maintenance
Shut down fan, place HOA in off, open switch gear, install fan brake, bump test, hang isolation
Explain the established procedure for performing the total chlorine sample analysis
Catch sample, rinse 25 mill bottle, fill 2 25 mil bottles, add reagent, read sample
