Q

Detail the anterior extrinsic shoulder muscle.

A

The pectoralis minor and serratus anterior are anterior muscles that attach the axial skeleton, via the rib cage, to the pectoral girdle.

Q

Detail the posterior extrinsic shoulder muscle.

A

The trapezius is the one main superficial posterior muscle that attaches the axial skeleton to the pectoral girdle.

Q

How many muscles move the humerus? What are they, and give a little description.

A

There are 2: divided into anterior and posterior. These are the 2 muscles that attach the axial skeleton to the humerus.

Anterior: the pectoralis major flexes the humerus.

Posterior: The latissimus dorsi extends the humerus.

Q

What is the deltoid?

A

It is the one main superficial muscles that moves the humerus and stabilizes the glenohumeral joint. This muscles abducts (motion of a limb away from the midline of the body) the arm. This is the muscle that attaches the pectoral girdle to the humerus.

Q

What do muscles that move the forearm (arm muscles) do?

A

these muscles flex and extend the forearm at the elbow joint. The bicep branchii flexes the forearm, while the triceps branchii extends the forearm.

Q

Detail the Biceps Brachii

A

On the anterior side, it is a powerful supinator of the forearm.

It has two heads, from “bi”

Brachii: means arm

Therefore it has 2 heads and is located in the arm

Q

Detail the triceps brachii.

A

On the posterior side, “tri” says 3 heads, “brachii” means located in the arm.

Q

How can muscles that move the wrist be divided into?

A

Into anterior and posterior divisions.

Anterior: Flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris muscles flex the wrist and have a common origin on the medial epicondyle of the humerus. Named depending on the bones they follow.

Posterior: The extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, and the extenson carpi ulnaris muscles extend the wrist. Their common origin on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. Named depending on the bones they follow.

Q

What does the word flexor mean? What is the function of the flexor

A

flexor: the muscle is performing a flexion

Carpi radialis: indicate that this muscle follows the radius to the wrist where we find the carpal bones. ‘

Therefore the function is flexon at the wrist.

Q

Describe the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris. What does each word of the muscle mean? And what is the function of the muscle?

A

muscle of the upper limb located in the posterior component of the forearm.

“Extensor” muscle performs extension.

“Carpi Ulnaris” muscle follows ulna in forearm

Q

What is the palmaris longus muscle?

A

It is a superficial muscle and inserts into connective tissues under the skin at the wrist. It is related to wrist flexibility, but does not play a signifigant role. This tendon is often used as a graft for tendon surgery.
