Multiculturalism
The idea that Canada consists of many different racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds. And all these backgrounds are celebrated and embraced as a part of Canada’s overall culture.
Bilingualism
A policy that spells out that both English and French are official languages in Canada.
House of Commons
Where members of parliament meet in Ottawa to conduct business.
Majority government
A government that holds the majority of the seats in parliament
Dissolution
The dissolving of parliament before an election
Mandate
The authority of an elected government or official to do the things that they promised to do before an election
Official opposition
The part with the second most seats in the House of Commons
Parliament
The federal government as a whole; and ensemble of the representatives of a political nation or people, often the supreme law making authority
Recession
Six months of negative economic growth
Infrastructure
The basic equipment and structures (such as roads and bridges) that are needed for a country, region, or organization to function properly
Charter of Rights and Freedoms
A part of the Canadian constitution that spells out the rights and freedoms of all Canadians. Created by conflicting opinions.
Minority Government
When the party in power has less than half of the seats in the House of Commons
Platform
Ideas put forth to pursuance constituents to vote for them
