Section I Flashcards
Acute Response
response after one bout of exercise
Chronic physiological adaptations
how body responds over time to stress of repeated exercise bouts
Homeostasis
maintenance of a constant, unchanging internal environment by the physiological systems; normally only at rest; typically negative feedback
Steady State
constant internal environment that may be different than rest
Homeostasis vs. Steady State
Steady state can be restricted to describing specific mechanisms while homeostasis describes entire internal environment
Longitudinal Research
tests the sam subjects and compares results over time (more accurate)
Cross-Sectional research
collects data from diverse population and compares the data for each group to that population
Myofibrils
contractile “threads” that run the length of the muscle fibers; made up of sarcomeres;
Sarcomeres
Composed of myosin and actin
Tropomyosin
covers myosin binding sites at rest
Troponin
Ca2+ binding site
Actin
myosin binding site
an __________, with signals from the brain or spinal cord, releases the neurotransmitter ________ at the neuromuscular junction
alpha motoneuron, acetycholine (ACh)
