Section D Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
Which one of the alkenes and alkanes have a double bond?
Alkenes.
What is a homologous series?
A family of compounds with similar properties because they have similar bonding.
What is a molecular formula?
Counts the numbers of each sort of atom present in the molecule.
Eg: propane C3H8
What is a condensation reaction?
A reaction in which a small molecule is lost when two others join together.
What does volatile mean?
Turns to vapour easily.
What is cracking?
Splitting up long-chain hydrocarbons.
How would you test to show the presence of a carbon double bond?
Shake in bromide water. This would make it decolourise.
What is polymerisation?
Lots of monomers joined together to create a polymer.
Name the straight chain isomer.
Pentane.
What is fermentation?
When enzymes in the yeast convert sugar into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
Define relative atomic mass.
The weighted average mass of isotopes of the element.
