How far do you agree that the extension of the franchise was the result of political rivalry 1828-1928?

P1-agree (Party rivalry)

  • 1832 Whigs v Tories-reform as revival for W-new voters
  • 1867 T v W-T see franchise as way of altering p. fortunes-boroughs to help Tories

P2-agree (Individual)

  • 1867 Disraeli v Gladstone/Derby v Russell
  • 1884-G wants achievement-various rivals within party eg Salisbury/Chamberlain etc

P3-disagree

  • changing social factors-increased pop/urbanisation/growth of m/c)
  • popular pressure-politicians act in own self interest (fear of rev 1832) but not p rivalry
  • does not explain timing of reform/process of passing acts

P4-disagree

  • other than 1867 p rivalry limited sig in 1918/28-more war related
  • 1884 rivalry more about redistribution than franchise ext
  • Libs felt franch ext would benefit them
  • key influence later years-momentum of demo
