Section B Flashcards
Types of Purpose
To argue, To persuade, To inform, To advise, To explain.
To argue
Its more measured
Both sides to the argument- Logical
Writing to argue is a less passionate way than when writing to persuade
Only thing you need to do differently is to argue and counter-argue
Your response will be a little bit more balanced
To persuade
Far more biased
You need to be pushy, positive & passionate- Emotive
Remember to have a clear line of argument and a structured response
To inform
You need to simply be clear, factual & neutral
Give detailed information
Subheadings can be useful here
To advise
Writing to advise is much like persuade and argue except it is a little more gentle
Passionate but more gentle
You are telling them that you are doing this to help them
It is for their benefit
To explain
To explain is perhaps the trickiest purpose out there
‘Explain your point of view’ Be careful, as this does not just want your opinion
Explain means you need to write for & against & then your opinion
The format as given the reasons for, give reasons against & your opinion
Types of text
Letter, Article. Speech, Leaflet, Essay.
Letter
2 things you need to remember if it is a letter is:
Adress- their address on the left - your address on the right and first
Correct ending- Sincerely if you do not know them and its formal - Faithfully if it is informal and you know them
Don’t worry about anything else if it is a letter
Article
Make sure that you include headings and subheadings
In a formal article the heading needs to be a full sentence
In an informal article the headings need to be a short, snappy slogan
DO NOT WRITE IN COLUMNS!!
Speech
Address a crowd- ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, today…..’
Have an exciting opening paragraph - A rhetorical question is always a good way to start
Have an exciting ending- slogan or direct address often works well here
Leaflet
Include a catchy title/heading
Include subtitles to separate the different sections- use questions as your subtitles
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT IMAGES OR LAYOUT!
THE SUBTITLES ARE ENOUGH
Essay
Have a clear introduction Have a strong conclusion Use clear paragraphs Essays will only ever ask you to explain/argue this means you need to either: Argue/Counter-argue/Argue or Agree/Disagree/Agree/Disagree
