section B Flashcards
to what extent is HDI effective measure of development
This is a much more accurate measure of both the standard of living AND quality of life in a country.
scale from 0-1 on everything.
difference between standard of living and quality of life
Standard of living refers to the level of wealth, comfort, material goods, and necessities available to a certain socioeconomic class or geographic area.
Quality of life, on the other hand, is a subjective term that can measure happiness.
economic development
economic development -
Economic Development is programs, policies or activities that seek to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for a community
DTM -
DTM
The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) captures the evolution of population growth through 4 main stages which follow the development and industrialisation of the economy and society. Each stage shows a different relationship between birth rates and death rates based on the economic development stage.
evaluate how far economic development links to the DTM
Overall, the relationship between the DTM and economic development is very strong however, it is not a perfect correlation because of lifestyle factors, tradition, disease and migration all causing significant exceptions.
link between trade and development gap
Trade is an engine of growth that creates jobs, reduces poverty and increases economic opportunity.
The price of manufactured goods is steadier which means that developed countries always benefit. A trade surplus allows a country’s economy to grow, while a trade deficit makes a country poorer. Increasing trade and reducing their balance of trade deficit is essential for the development of a country.
how does uneven development cause migration
Migration. Uneven development can lead to higher rates of migration. People migrate for many different reasons, usually as a result of push and pull factors. Some people move to find better employment opportunities, others flee dangerous situations.
how can industrialistion reduce development gap
brings big companies from around the world to locate in undeveloped areas. this provides jobs for the locals and uplifts poverty.
Industrial development brings employment opportunities in construction, manufacturing and service industries. Increased individual wealth leads to improvements in health, education and service provision through the payment of more taxes.
whys aid be sustainable
Sustainable aid is how industrialized, developed countries can fight and, over time, end poverty. Teaching people in developing countries how to farm will not only feed them forever, but will also grant them the opportunity to move upward economically.
is trade or aid the best way for a country to develop
Trade requires investment first!
Many poor countries do not have the money to invest in making their industries efficient so that they can compete with richer nations and companies. Aid can actually help people, both in times of crisis and over the long term
how can debt relief help women
reduce amount of debt you are in lets women stay home and work and hep with children
how can tourism reduce development gap
brings tourists to the country. provides jobs for people, multiplier affect, money to government, invest in economic growth, invest in a lot
how can manufacturing industry stimulate economic development
The manufacturing attracts jobs DIRECTLY within the factory as locals take up new jobs. These locals then spend their money in the local economy and pay taxes.
benefits of TNCs
More investment.
Creation of more jobs… For local businesses to help parts of the TNC operations. …
Encouragement of international trade - opening new markets should increase economic growth.
Improvement of educational outcomes as TNCs requires skilled workers
disadvantages of TNCs
The exploitation of workers – Even though transnational companies do provide employment opportunities, they also can exploit the employees. …
Environmental damage – Transnational companies often receive critics for their harm to the environment
