Section A - Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a Natural Hazard?
A hazard is a natural event that has the possibility to cause loss of life or economic damage
What is a Natural Disaster?
when a natural event does cause loss of life and damage to property
What is a Natural Event?
is a naturally occurring physical occurrence
What are the Atmospheric Hazards and Examples?
created in the atmosphere, by the movement of air e.g.- Tropical storms, tornadoes and droughts
What are the Tectonic Hazards and Examples?
created by the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates, e.g- Tsunami, Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquake
What are the Geomorphological Hazards and Examples?
created on the earth’s surface by soil, water or rock e.g- Avalanche, Landslide, Flooding
What are the Biological Hazards and Examples?
involves living organisms e.g.- Forest Fire
What are the 5 Natural Hazard Risks?
Urbanisation, Magnitude/Frequency, Level of Economic Development, Climate Change, Geographical Location
What is Urbanisation Natural Hazard Risk?
densely populated regions are at a greater risk as there are more people in possible danger
What is Magnitude/Frequency Natural Hazard Risk?
the bigger the size of the event the bigger the impacts and damage. The more frequent the event is to an area the less of an impact as people will be more prepared and more coped
What is the Level of Economic Development Natural Hazard Risk?
HICs are better equipped as they have better infrastructure, emergency services and systems for monitoring and predicting natural hazards
What is Climate Change Natural Hazard Risk?
as temperature increases the risk of extreme weather such as droughts and tropical storms increases. Also flooding risk increases as sea levels rise
What is Geographical Location Natural Hazard Risk?
civilisations in areas that are more at risk of natural hazards such as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Higher Temperature areas are more at risk from droughts and tropical storms
