Section A - Hazardous Earth Flashcards
1 a(i) identify which one of the following is the location of an arid area
A
1a(ii) identify which one of the following statements describes the movement of air in a Hadley cell
B
1a(iii) Explain 1 role of ocean currents
The redistribution of heat energy regulates high temperatures at the equator
1b(i) compare changes in the price of meat and sugar between 1990 and 2015
Sugar is more expensive than meat, also between 2007 and 2011 the price of sugar increased faster than the price of meat.
1b(ii) explain one reason why climate change might affect the price of food
There could be times where there is lower rainfall which causes drought. This means that food are becoming more in demand and the prices of food are going.

A and C
1c(iii) suggest two reasons why some areas of Manhattan are more vulnerable to coastal flooding than others
- There are many underground railways below sea level which could easily flood. This means that the damage it creates will affect commuters travelling to work
- In some areas there will be a higher density of people. This means that there is a high demand on emergency services which puts pressure on them.
1c(iv) is explain two ways a map like figure 1c is useful when countries prepare for a tropical storm
- It identifies the subways which get affected the most and could close. This means that commuters need to consider other routes to get to work.
- Infrastructure by the coastline could cause people to relocate away from the coastal areas.
1d Explain one cause for the movement of tectonic plates
At convergent plate boundaries, gravity causes denser oceanic crust to subduct, dragging the rest of the tectonic plate down. (This means that the convection currents brake down the heat.)
