Adverb?
A word that describes a noun. It can also indicate degree. Adverbs are modifiers.
Adjective?
A word that describes a noun. It can also indicate degree. Adjectives are modifiers.
Verb?
A word that expresses actions, states of being or processes.
Full/Lexical Verbs?
Act as a main verb and have a clear stateable meaning.
e.g. Run, jump, go, look.
Modal Auxiliary Verbs?
Express a range of judgements about the likelihood of events.
e.g. Will, shall, may, can, could.
Primary Verbs?
Can function either as main verbs or auxiliary verbs.
e.g. Be, have, do.
Noun?
A word class with a naming function.
Proper Nouns?
The names of specific people, places, times, occasions, events and so on.
e.g. London, Lulu, July
Common Nouns?
General objects or ideas.
e.g. Table, window, book, pen.
Abstract Nouns?
Qualities or states that exist only in our minds.
e.g. Cleverness, courage, justice, loyalty.
Collective Nouns?
Groups of people, or collection of things as whole.
e.g. Crowd, flock, regiment, forest.
Pronoun?
Stands in place of a noun.
Personal pronouns?
It/He/She
e.g. The man bought a new car. It (his new car) is red.
Possessive pronouns?
My/Your/His/Her/It’s
e.g. The dog wagged it’s tail in excitement.
Reflexive Pronoun?
Myself/Yourself/Himself/Herself
