Bounty
A sum of money given as a bonus, The north tried to encourage voluntary enlistment by offering this to individuals who promised to serve three years in the military
First Battle of Bull Run
Key Players: General Irwin McDowell, Thomas J. Jackson, General P.G.T. Beauregard
Victor: Confederacy
Significance: made it clear that the north would need a large, well trained army to defeat the South
Militia Act in July 1862
Gave Lincoln the authority to call state militias which included drafted troops into federal service
Blockade Runners
Small fast vessels the south used to smuggle goods past the blockade usually under cover of night, The south could ship some cotton to Europe and exchange for shoes rifles and other supplies
David G. Faragut
Took command of the union force of 42 warships and 15,000 soldiers led by Benjamin butler; he was a war veteran of the war of 1812
Battle of New Orleans
Key Players: David G. Farragut, Benjamin Butler
Victory: Union
Significance: The Union gains control of New Orleans, which is the largest city and the center of the cotton trade
Ulysses S. Grant
A union general Who campaigned to control the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers; he was able to gain control of all of Kentucky and most of western Tennessee
Shiloh
Key Players: Ulysses S Grant
Victor: union but also not
Significance: gave the union control of western Tennessee, killed or wounded more than 20,000 troops
Murfreesboro
Key Players: Braxton Braggs, William Rosecrans
Victor: Union
Result: confederate army retreated when Union reinforcements arrived from Nashville
George B McClellan
Chosen to lead the union army in the east, he was slow to move without overwhelming strength And it took him 30 days to capture Yorktown
The Peninsula Campaign
Key players:General Robert E Lee, and General George B McClellan
General Robert E Lee launched a series of attacks in June 1862 on Mcclellans army and is known as the seven days battle
Result: The South forced the north to retreat leaving the confederate forces very close to Washington
The Battle of Antietam
Key players: Robert E Lee, George B McClellan
Victor: Union
Significance: convinced Britain from recognizing the Confederacy as a separate nation and convinced Lincoln that the time had come to end slavery in the south
Emancipation Proclamation
Freed slaves in the states still in rebellion after January 1, 1863 the proclamation freed enslaved African-Americans only in states at war with the union and did not address border states
