Section 8 Flashcards
How are bulkheads different than baffles?
Bulkheads divide a large tank into smaller tanks. Baffles have holes in them and are placed into tanks to control slosh
Should a tank vehicle take curves, on ramps, or off ramps at the posted speed
limits?
NO
How are smooth bore tankers different to drive than those with baffles?
Smooth bore tankers do not have baffles and are more likely to suffer from forward and backward surge.
What three things determine how much liquid you can load?
The amount the liquid will expand in transit.
The weight of the liquid.
Legal weight limits.
What is outage?
Liquids expand as they warm and you must leave room for the expanding liquid. This is called “outage.”
How can you help control surge?
Keep a steady pressure on the brakes. Do not release too soon when coming to a stop. Brake far in advance of a stop and increase your following distance.
What two reasons make special care necessary when driving tank vehicles?
high center of gravity and liquid movement
