Section 6: Magnetism Flashcards
What do all magnets have?
A North and South Pole
Where does the magnetic field flow?
From N to S
Ferromagnetic materials
Iron, cobalt, nickel and steel
What do magnets do?
Repel and attract other magnets
Attract magnetic substances (ferromagnetic materials)
What do magnetic field lines show?
The direction, force and strength of a magnetic field.
They always point from N to S
Properties of magnetically hard materials
They are hard to magnetise and demagnetise
Properties of magnetically soft materials
They are easy to magnetise and demagnetise
Magnetic field around a bar magnet
Magnetic field strongest around the 2 poles.
The field is strongest where the lines are closest
Draw magnetic field patterns around a single bar magnet
Check iPad
Draw a magnetic field pattern around 2 bar magnets
Check iPad
How is a uniform magnetic field created using 2 bar magnets?
When they are placed side by side, with N by S . Their magnetic fields attract each other
What is an uniform magnet field?
When magnetic field lines are the same distance apart
Electromagnetism
When a magnetic fields is created around a wire that has current running through it
Describe experiments to investigate magnetic field patterns of
- a permanent bar magnet
- between 2 bar magnets
- iron filings which will line up along the magnetic field as they are magnetic materials
- compasses which will show that the lines go from north to south
