Virginia Plan
Edmund Randolph proposed a new federal constitution that would give sovereignty, or supreme power, to the central government.
Constitutional Convention
Held in May 1787 in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall to improve the Articles of Confederation.
New Jersey Plan
Called for a unicameral, or one-house, legislature. The plan gave each state an equal number of votes, and thus an equal voice, in the federal government. Introduced by William Patterson.
Great Compromise
The agreement to create a two-house legislature. Each state would have 2 representatives. 1 house would have more representative based on amount of people.
Three-Fifths Compromise
Under this agreement only 3/5 of a states slave population would count when determining representation.
Popular Sovereignty
The idea that political authority belongs to the people.
Federalism
Federalism is the sharing of power between a central government and the states that make up a country.
Legislative Branch
Congress is responsible for posing and passing laws.
Executive Branch
Includes the President and the departments that help run the government.
Judicial Branch
The judicial branch is made up of all the national courts.
Checks and Balances
Which keep any branch of government from becoming too powerful.
Branch 1
Legislative branch. 2 houses. Makes laws.
Branch 2
Executive branch, President, enforces laws, police officers.
Branch 3
Judicial branch, court system, interprets laws.
