Section 5.3 & 5.4 (MG&DX) Flashcards
What is Passive Transport
Diffusion of a substance across a membrane with no energy investment
What is a Concentration Gradient
The difference in the concentration of a substance between two areas
What is Osmosis
The movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a lower to a higher solute concentration
Define Tonicity
The ability of a surrounding solution to cause a cell to gain or lose water
What is the difference between isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic?
A solution is isotonic when it has an equal concentration both inside and outside of the cell.
A solution is hypertonic when it is more concentrated inside the cell, causing it to burst.
A solution is hypotonic when it is the opposite of hypertonic, with a higher concentration of the solute being outside of the cell.
What is Facilitated Diffusion
When Passive Transport is aided by a Protein
What are Ion Channels
They are Proteins that help Ions to move across the Cell Membrane.
What is the difference between Open and Gated Ion Channels
Open Ion Channels act like pores to allow Ions to simply flow through the membrane
Gated Ion Channels open and close in response to a stimulus, which can electrical, chemical or mechanical.
What is Active Transport?
Active Transport uses Energy to move Solutes against their Gradients
