section 5 - solid, liquids and gases Flashcards
1
Q
What is the equation for density?
A
density = mass/volume
2
Q
How do you find the density of a liquid?
A
- Find the mass of the measuring cylinder by placing it on a balance, then fill it with the liquid, and measure the new mass. The different in masses is the mass of the liquid.
- The volume can be read from the cylinder
- Find density using Density = mass/volume
3
Q
How do you find the density of a solid?
A
- measure the mass of a solid by placing it on the balance
- then immerse the solid in water, and measure the volume of water displaced, this is the volume of the solid
- use density = mass/volume
4
Q
What is density?
A
The mass per unit volume.
5
Q
What is density measured in?
A
kg/m3
6
Q
What is Pressure?
A
The force per unit area.
7
Q
What is Pressure measured in?
A
Pascals (Pa)
8
Q
When does melting occur?
A
Melting occurs when molecules in a solid vibrate enough to move away from their fixed positions, turning into a liquid.
