Section 5: Groups of the Periodic table Flashcards
What is group 0 called?
Noble gases
What are the properties of Group 0?
Unreactive and do not form diatomic molecules
What are the trends of Group 0?
Boiling point increases going down the group.
What are the reactions of group 0?
Very unreactive because they have full outer shells.
What is group 1 called?
Alkali metals
What are the properties of group 1?
They are reactive because they can easily lose their one outermost electrons. They always form ionic compounds. Low density.
What are the trends of group 1?
Reactivity increases going down the group. Melting points and boiling points decrease going down the group.
What are the reactions of group 1?
With water: metal + water - metal hydroxide + hydrogen
With oxygen: Metal + oxygen - metal oxide
With chlorine: Metal + chlorine - metal chloride
What is group 7 called?
Halogens
What are the properties of group 7?
Low melting points and boiling points.
Poor conductors of heat and electricity.
Form diatomic structures.
What are the trends of group 7?
Reactivity decreases going down the group. Boiling point and melting point increase going down the group.
What are the reactions of group 7?
A more reactive halogen can displace a less reactive halogen from a solution of its salt.
Chlorine + sodium bromide - sodium chloride + bromine
