Section 4.2 (physical and human processes) Flashcards
Compare the weathering found on upland and lowland landscapes
On an upland landscape, freeze-thaw weathering is very common. The days are often warmer than freezing, but during the night, temperatures drop below 0°c causing freeze-thaw weathering. However on lowland landscapes, the area is consisted of chalk (calcium carbonate) is vulnerable to chemical weathering.
Compare soil/rock movement processes on upland and lowland landscapes
Soil creep in the lowland areas is where water mixes with soil particles. In the upland areas, rockfalls occur when unbounded scree effectively collapses due to gravity. Landslides are also common.
Compare post-glacial processes in the upland and lowland areas.
In the lowland areas consisting of chalk, it is uncommon to find rivers as chalk is porous. In an upland area, misfit streams are common, depositing silt and mud is common, forming very fertile farmland.
Give one way that humans have impacted upland landscapes.
Sheep farming increases the risk of soil saturation, a thin layer of soil could easily be washed away.
Give one way that humans have impacted lowland areas.
Large villages are found around large farms. Patterns the land
Would a dip slope be found in an upland or lowland landscape?
Lowland landscape, they form from the tilted landscape
