Section 4 : Networking Devices Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)?
A
- The network adapter installed on your network device
- Provides the physcial and electrical, light or radio frequency connections to the network media
- It can etiher be an expansion card, used devices or built directly into the motherboard
2
Q
What is a Network Hub?
A
- Used to connect devices together in a network.
- Used in early Networks; replaced by Switches.
- “Multi-Port Repeater”
- Traffic goes in one port and is repeated out every other port
- OSI Layer 1 device
- Dumb Network Device
- Much less efficient than a switch
3
Q
What is a Network Switch?
A
- Connects devices together just like a Hub.
- Intelligent network device.
- Memorizes the MAC Address of each device connected to it via MAC Address Table.
- Pays attention to Source and Destination MAC addresses during communication process.
- Traffic goes into One port and is repeated out to only Destination Port
- Designed for High Bandwidth
4
Q
Hub VS Switch?
A
Hub:
- Dumb device
- Floods all ports
- OSI Layer 1 device
- Less secure
- Collisions more frequent
Switch:
- Intelligent device
- Learns ports by MAC Address
- Only sends to specified port
- OSI Layer 2 device
- More Secure
- Colision less frequent
5
Q
What is Wireless Access Point(WAP)?
A
- WAP is a Bridge
- Allows mobile users to connect to a wired Network wirelessly
- Uses 802.11 standard
- Encryption (WEP,WPA,WPA2)
6
Q
What is a Network Router?
A
- Used to connect different networks together.
- Routes traffic between networks using IP Addresses.
- Uses Intelligent decisions (Routing Protocols) to find the best way to get a packet of information from one network to another.
- OSI Layer 3 device
7
Q
What is a Network Firewall?
A
- Protects your LAN from Malicious activity on the Internet
- Prevents unwanted network traffic on different networks from accessing your network and vice versa
- Controls the flow of information in and out of your network
- You create networt access rules sets to setup and maintain a firewall.
- A Firewall can be s standalone network device or Software on a computer.
8
Q
What us a Network DHCP Server?
A
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(DHCP) Server.
- Automatically assigns IP Addresses to hosts.
- makes administering a network much easier.
- The alternative is Static IP Address.
