Section 4, Lesson 4.3 Flashcards
What is a ‘level’ or ‘layer’ in an argument map?
A horizontal row of a carefully drawn argument map
Levels help organize complex arguments into distinct rows for clarity.
What is a Main Conclusion?
The final conclusion of the argument that does not serve as a premise for any other proposition
Always located in the bottom-most layer of the argument map.
What is a Main Premise?
One among the set of premises directly supporting the main conclusion
Always found in the layer that’s second from the bottom in the argument map.
Define Sub-Inference.
An inference from a premise to another premise
The conclusion of a sub-inference is never in the bottom-most layer.
What is a sub-premise?
A premise in a sub-inference
Sub-premises support sub-conclusions within the argument structure.
What is a sub-conclusion?
A conclusion in a sub-inference that is usually one of the main premises
Sub-conclusions are always premises themselves unless the argument is complex.
